Why does religion matter so much to you?

Your thoughts make a lot of sense. Our country is supposed to have a rigid wall between church and state, but several right-wing groups have tapped into certain social issues that tend keep religion and politics inseparable. You are correct that when the U.S. was established, there was to be no litmus test to run for political office. Sadly, we have seen this fade into oblivion which is dangerous to an open and democratic society. During the current campaign season, the obfuion about Senator Obama's background is only to incite fear of the supposed unknown. Very sad commentary about America in the 21st century.
